A historical birthday

In 2025 it represents a significant time for Catllar, as it commemorates the 50th anniversary of its castellera revival, after almost 75 years without documentation of performances. The roots of this tradition go back to the festival of 1889, with the last performance recorded before the pause, while the 20th century saw the new castellera road born in 1975.

Plaça de la Vila: epicenter of castellera culture

Plaça de la Vila, popularly known as ‘La Raval’, has become a nerve point for the casteller community, hosting during the month of August one of the most important days of the calendar. In addition, the July Day has experienced significant growth, consolidating itself as a prominent event.

Commemorative acts throughout the year

To celebrate this half century of castellera passion, the City Council has designed a series of activities that will take place throughout the year. These initiatives will not only celebrate local history, but will also promote debate and actions, emphasizing the importance of Catllar in the evolution of the casteller phenomenon.

A prominent first act

The first relevant event will take place on Sunday, March 23 at the Catllar Cultural Center, with the title ‘The genesis of 5de9 with lining’. This day will include the screening of a documentary entitled ‘El Link’, prepared by the Colla Jove Xiquets de Tarragona.

Debate with 5de9 pioneers lined

After the screening, a round table will be held with eight of the gang leaders who paved the way for the first 5de9 lined down in the square. Among them are prominent names such as Jordi Sentís and Màrius Boada, as well as other key figures that have left their mark in the castellera history.

Special performance at Catllar Castle

The traditional castellera performance in the castle of Catllar promises to be a memorable event this year, scheduled for May 18. The Castellers de Altafulla and the boys of the Tower, the first group that performed in the municipality without a shirt, will come together to offer a day full of emotions. Before entering the castle, they will also raise structures in the Plaza de la Vila.

Key dates for summer

The Casteller del Catllar calendar includes two important dates in the summer. The day of July will be held on July 19 at 19:00, with the participation of groups such as Children del Vendrell and Xiquets de Reus. On August 23, at 18:00, the Day of the Festa Major will take place with the participation of Castellers de Vilafranca and other outstanding groups.

A closure dedicated to casteller journalism

Towards the fall, a final event is expected to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the castellera revival in Catllar, focusing on the vision of local castle journalism, with a date yet to be determined. This session will seek to reflect on the role of the media in the dissemination of this rich tradition.

As the Catllar celebrates its castellera inheritance, it is clear that the legacy of these 50 years is not only a past story, but also a vibrant future and full of possibilities.
