by PREMIUM.CAT

A significant birthday for the Tarragona police

The City Council of Tarragona has recently commemorated an emblematic event: the 50th anniversary of the incorporation of women into the Guàrdia Urbana, coinciding with the celebrations of International Women’s Day. This celebration not only highlights the story of this police body, but also its commitment to gender equality.

Remembering the beginnings of the female unit

Mayor Rubén Viñuales recalled with nostalgia the first service of the women’s unit, which took place on January 5, 1975 during the Cavalcade of Kings. “This date marks a before and after in the history of the Local Police,” he said, emphasizing the importance of this milestone for the city.

Recognize effort and dedication

During the event, Viñuales addressed the active and retirement agents present, expressing their pride in their dedication and professionalism. He added that with his incorporation, a new chapter is being written in the history of the Guàrdia Urbana, a chapter that continues under construction.

The current state of the female presence in the police

The Guàrdia Urbana currently has 32 active women, including three captains, who operate in various body units, such as traffic, complaints office and communication unit, among others. This diversity in the roles reflects a significant change in the culture of the police body.

Commitment to equality

Manel Vázquez, the head of the Urban Guard, emphasized his commitment to foster the feminization of the body. He stated that, despite legislative obstacles, his mission is to make the Guàrdia Urbana an attractive place for women, with the aspiration that each year younger will be presented to the opposition.

The need for female references

The event was inaugurated by Sonia Orts, Deputy Mayor, who emphasized the importance of having more women in leading positions in all sectors. “Society needs these models to inspire future generations,” he said with conviction.

A tangible recognition

Agents, both active and retired, received a diploma as a symbol of recognition, given by the mayor, the counselor and the CAP intendant. Those who could not attend the event will also receive their diploma, thus reaffirming the city’s commitment to their police.
