Review of temporary foster care plans

Recently, the media from Lleida reported on an agreement between the City Council of Lleida and Adif to transform the old hotel of the station into a foster care center for temporary workers during the fruit campaign. However, this initiative has undergone an unexpected turn.

Suspension of negotiations

The chief paer, Felix Larrosa, has decided to interrupt the conversations with Adif, quoting ‘disagreements’ as the main reason. The Deputy Mayor, Cristina Morón, confirmed that the proposed conditions did not guarantee the viability of the service, questioning the continuity of the hostel during the summer.

Foster care alternatives

With this decision, the summer hostel will remain, as in previous years, in Pavilion 3 of the Fira de Lleida. Larrosa said that the election was due to Adif discrepancies on the conditions of use of the old hotel.

History of the hotel and its closure

The Hotel de l’Estació, known as Hotel Rambla, closed its doors in 2020, first due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and then due to financial difficulties that affected its owner. During the period of pandemic, the establishment was reused by the Department of Health to house temporary viruses.

Balance of winter foster care

The winter foster care service has served a total of 280 people, with a total of 8,160 overnight stays, reflecting the need for an effective reception system in the region.

Social Inclusion Initiatives

In October 2024, the Lleida City Council presented a new inclusion model for the homeless, with the aim of providing assistance to 519 individuals through various facilities in the city. This plan includes accommodation and services adapted to different groups, as well as a modular property in the Caparrella.

Catalan Government Commitment

The Catalan Government, recognizing the importance of this plan, has pledged to allocate 6 million euros to finance its implementation, thus emphasizing the collaboration between administrations to address the social needs of the population.
