The growing concern for the mental health of young people

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the emotional well-being of children and adolescents has been a topic of intense debate. Educators from the Pere Tarrés Foundation have observed a constant deterioration in the mental health of the children cared for in their centers, a situation that has not been accompanied by an adequate increase in the resources needed to deal with this reality.

A study that reveals the magnitude of the problem

A recent report by the Foundation analyzes the situation of young people at risk, revealing that 14.1% of the children in care have diagnoses of mental or learning disorders. This figure is alarming, as it doubles compared to the rate of these disorders in children from families with fewer resources in Catalonia, which is 7.9%.

Types of disorders identified

Learning disorders, such as Autism Spectrum Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, are the most common, along with mental health problems including anxiety and eating disorders. In addition, educators suggest that the reality could be even more worrying, as many cases could be underdiagnosed.

The role of stigma and access to services

The stigma associated with mental illness and the difficulty of accessing health services are factors that contribute to underdiagnosis, according to professionals at the centers. It is considered that up to 15% of undiagnosed children could have characteristics compatible with mental disorders, needing professional evaluations.

Risk and vulnerability: a dangerous combination

The study also highlights the relationship between academic difficulties and mental disorders. Approximately 60% of children diagnosed are between 3 and 11 years old, with a notable incidence of anxiety and loneliness among the youngest. The interaction between socioeconomic vulnerability and mental health becomes a vicious circle that affects children’s development.

Triggering factors

Aspects such as poverty, food insecurity, domestic violence and family breakdown are components that amplify the risk of developing mental problems, creating an urgent need for intervention.

Proposals for the solution

To face this crisis, the report recommends increasing the training of professionals and incorporating psychologists into socio-educational centers. In addition, awareness programs are proposed to combat the stigma associated with mental health, as well as priority attention to the most vulnerable children.

Initiatives to improve the situation

With the aim of dealing with this alarming situation, the Foundation has launched the ‘Actual for mental health’ campaign, which seeks to raise funds to provide resources and tools for faster detection and treatment of mental disorders in children. More information available on their website.
