A New Smell in the Life of Francesc Vicent Garcia
2023 has been a significant year for Catalan literature, as we have commemorated the fourth centenary of the death of Francesc Vicent Garcia, an emblematic figure of the Baroque. This celebration has been marked by a new edition of his poetic work and a review of his legacy, which is now presented with an exhibition at the Museum of the History of Catalonia, curated by Albert Rossich and Marc Sogues.
Demystifying the Historical Character
Garcia, born in 1579, is a name that resonates in popular culture, but his true impact is often overshadowed by the nebula of legends that surround him. Albert Rossich offers us a new perspective on this poet, highlighting how his work has been fundamental in the literary transformation of Catalonia in his time. His influence extended beyond his time, and although he was disparaged by the renovators of the Renaissance at the end of the 19th century, his essence has endured.
A Trip from Tortosa to Vallfogona
Garcia’s career begins in Zaragoza, in a family originally from Tortosa, a city that played a central role in 16th century Catalonia. His theological training in Barcelona and his subsequent ordination as a priest in Vic marked the path that would lead him to become Rector of Vallfogona, a title that has endured in the collective memory.
The Poetics of Disillusionment: A Reflex of the Baroque
His poetic work, immersed in baroque aesthetics, explores the idea that reality is an illusion created by the senses. Rossich emphasizes that Garcia, by adapting baroque forms to Catalan, created a rich and expressive language, fusing cultist elements with popular language. This set a model that inspired many later poets, although its true essence has often been misunderstood.
Desire as a Central Axis
Contrary to what many might think, the eschatological theme is not predominant in his work. Instead, desire emerges as the great theme of his compositions, which oscillate between a materialistic perspective and a more humorous and light-hearted view of life and human relationships.
An Exhibition that Vindicates the Myth
The exhibition not only traces Garcia’s life, but also examines his cultural heritage over the centuries. From his popularity during the 17th century to his revaluation in recent times, the tour offers a new vision of the poet, moving away from the simplistic image that has been built of him.
Associated Activities
Until September 15, the public can enjoy this exhibition at the Museum of the History of Catalonia. In addition, on September 12 at 7pm, a recital by Enric Casasses has been organized, entitled ‘In his natural figure’, which promises to take the attendees on a journey through Garcia’s poetic work.
Final Reflections on a Living Legacy
Francesc Vicent Garcia, more than just a name, is a symbol of an era and a witness to a rich literary tradition. His work continues to inspire new generations, and with exhibitions like this one, his legacy remains alive in the cultural consciousness of Catalonia.
