The insects known as silverfish

You’ve probably seen the insects known as silverfish on more than one occasion. These insects belong to the species lepisma saccharina and usually live in humid places.

Silverfish have an elongated shape and a silvery gray color. Although they are not harmful to health, they can become a problem if they settle in your bathroom or other rooms in your home. In addition, they can damage food and attract other unwanted species.

Methods to remove silverfish

If you want to end the presence of these annoying insects in your home, there are several methods you can try:

1. Spray them with ethyl alcohol

One option is to spray the silverfish with ethyl alcohol. This substance affects them and can help reduce their population.

2. Use boric acid

Another option is to apply boric acid in corners and cracks where these insects usually appear. Boric acid is an effective product for controlling silverfish pests.

3. Use insecticide

If none of the above methods work, you can resort to using insecticide to get rid of silverfish effectively.

An effective home remedy

One of the most effective home remedies to get rid of these insects is to create a homemade trap. To do this, you will need a glass jar and some rolled oats.

Place the open jar on the ground, with the opening facing up. Wrap the jar with duct tape so the little silverfish can grab onto it and climb up.

Inside the jar, put the oat flakes, as this food is one of the favorites of the silverfish. When they enter the jar, they will not be able to get out, as they will slide down the glass walls.

Other home remedies

In addition to the homemade trap, there are other remedies you can try to keep silverfish away from your home:

1. Cedar shavings

Scatter cedar shavings and leaves around your home, especially in places where you’ve seen these insects. Silverfish can’t stand the smell of cedar.

2. Cinnamon

Cinnamon is a good repellent for silverfish. Sprinkle some cinnamon where they usually appear or place cinnamon sticks in different corners of your home.

3. Lavender

Lavender essential oil is an effective natural repellent. Apply a few drops of oil in the areas where the silverfish usually appear. You can also use lemon or orange oils, diluting them in water and spraying them on the bathroom floor.
