Summer festivities in Spanish towns are usually an amalgam of local traditions, with parades, correfocs and typical dances. Carlos Martínez, the socialist mayor, surprised those attending the event by appearing in a vehicle adapted to imitate a ‘Popemobile’. During his tour of the streets, he made gestures of ‘blessing’ with a toilet brush, which provoked adverse reactions among the political opposition.

Criticism was not long in coming. Both the Popular Party and Vox expressed their disapproval. The PP, through a statement, stressed that no festive event can justify the violation of traffic regulations. They stated that the lack of safety devices during the mayor’s route could have endangered other drivers and pedestrians.
Questions about Responsibility
The Popular Party also questioned Martínez’s dedication to his role as mayor, suggesting that after more than two decades in office, his sense of responsibility and exemplarity had noticeably diminished. Criticism focused on the fact that this event took place on a work day, which intensified doubts about his commitment to his public duties.
Vox joins the controversy
The far-right party also joined the wave of criticism, calling Martínez’s conduct in bad taste. They said the mayor’s actions, in ‘handing out blessings’ in this way, were disrespectful to the rules and the community. However, so far, neither Martínez nor his party have offered an official response to the accusations.

The figure of the mayor, who should be a role model, has been tarnished by actions that defy legality.
