The rejection of the declaration as BIC of the Pyramid of the Italians

A controversy broke out in the Cortes of Castilla y León when the political parties PP and Vox expressed their refusal to annul the declaration of the Pyramid of the Italians as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC). This pyramid, located in the port of Escudo, on the border between Burgos and Cantabria, has been a source of controversy due to its historical significance.

The position of the political parties

The PSOE presented a motion to reverse the declaration of the monument and comply with the resignification as established in the Democratic Memory Law. However, both the PP and Vox voted against this proposal. The socialist José Ignacio Martín Benito accused the Board of imposing an ideological bias in the conservation of heritage, especially with the arrival of Vox to the government in Castilla y León.

The rejection argument

The PP argued that the pyramid meets all the requirements to be declared a BIC, and cited the opinion of several experts who support its position. For its part, Vox accused the PSOE of using history as a political tool and pointed out that both the municipality and the owner of the monument are satisfied with its declaration as BIC.

The call of the Mixed Group

The attorneys of the Mixed Group urged to vote separately to know the Government’s will regarding compliance with the laws. In addition, they asked the PP and Vox parties to consider the resignification of the fascist monument and compliance with the Democratic Memory Law.
