A new power line that divides territories
The association Prioritat, which is working to obtain recognition from Unesco as a World Heritage Site, has expressed its concern about the installation of a very high voltage line (MAT) that will extend between Cucalón, in Aragon, and Begues, in Baix Llobregat. According to the entity, this infrastructure will divide the countryside of Tarragona and the Terres de l’Ebre into two.
Worrying environmental impact
With a planned route of 180 kilometers within Catalonia out of a total of 375, Prioritat warns that the project will have significant environmental consequences. The association remembers that the area already supports two MAT lines and criticizes the Spanish government’s decision to make public the information on the environmental impact study in August, a time when many administrations and citizens are on vacation.
Allegations and opposition to the project
Despite the situation, Priority has decided to present allegations against this new line. The entity highlights that the proposed route affects several municipalities that have already received favorable reports for other renewable energy projects, thus questioning the coherence of the current plan.
Criticism of the current energy model
The association criticizes that an energy model is being promoted that would prioritize mercantilist interests to the detriment of renewable energies, arguing that a centralized and speculative approach is preferred instead of distributed energy production.
Disintegration of the territory
Prioritat also emphasizes that the new MAT will contribute to de-inverting and emptying territories that already suffer from demographic problems, with the aim of supplying energy at low prices for the metropolitan area of Barcelona.
Controversy over ownership
The entity maintains that this line should not be considered an evacuation line, but an energy transmission line, which would make it the first privately owned, a situation that is not allowed under current legislation .
Controversial data and lack of rigor
Finally, Prioritat criticizes that Forestalia, the cluster that promotes the MAT, has presented an environmental study that they consider lacking in technical rigor and lack of knowledge of the territory. The association warns that these studies often end up being a mere formality to justify projects that do not adequately respect the environment.
