A new course for local heritage
The City Council of Tortosa has decided to undertake an ambitious project to revitalize the advances of Sant Joan and the Fortí d’Orleans, in order to value the historical heritage of the city. This initiative is part of the Tourist Sustainability Plan in destinations, funded by the Next Generation EU funds, and aims to transform these spaces into a first -magnitude tourist attraction.
A museum experience outdoors
According to Mayor Jordi Jordan, this project will transform the fortifications into an ‘open -air museum’. This, together with other initiatives such as the Green Circuit and an interactive mystery game, seeks to make Tortosa’s fortified richness more accessible and attractive to both residents and visitors.
Objectives of the museumization
The Councilor for Tourism, Sònia Rupérez, emphasized that museumization would not only tell the story of these spaces, but also offer a view of the city’s defensive systems during the 17th to the nineteenth centuries. In addition, this effort will contribute to civic education and the promotion of cultural tourism.
Details of the project
The contract to carry out this museumization has been awarded to the Red and Associate Children company, with a budget of 237,855 euros. The work is expected to be completed on December 15, 2025, and will include the creation of museographic elements that will enrich the visitor’s experience.
Innovative museographic elements
Among the novelties, a three-dimensional model will be installed in the Plaza de Armas, as well as twenty-five information panels and four stage spaces with figures of soldiers and replicas of guns. Videos will also be presented that will complement the scenery, offering an immersive view of the story.
The fort of Orleans: a space of historical reflection
As for the fort of Orleans, the intervention will focus on its covered path, where two interpretation stations will be installed. One of them will focus on the model of the fort, while the other will address the figure of military engineers and the process of building this important defensive infrastructure, dating to the eighteenth century.
A promising future for the heritage of Tortosa
With these initiatives, Tortosa not only seeks to preserve its heritage, but also aspires to obtain the UNESCO World Heritage Declaration, in collaboration with other cities. Thus, the city is positioned as a cultural destination of reference, with the aim of connecting the past with the present and ensuring that future generations can enjoy and learn from its rich history.
