PSC presents Bote as a candidate for the FMC
The Catalan Socialist Party (PSC) has proposed the current mayor of Mataró, David Bote, to assume the presidency of the Federació de Municipis de Catalunya (FMC). This decision, which has been communicated to the different formations represented in the entity, marks a significant step in Catalan municipal politics.
A change in the leadership of the FMC
If the proposal is approved, Bote will succeed Eduard Rivas, the mayor of Esparreguera, who has decided to leave his post to take on the role of chief of staff to President Salvador Illa. Rivas has held the presidency since October last year and his resignation opens the door to new leadership in the FMC.
David Bote’s profile
Born in 1982 in Barcelona, David Bote has been the mayor of Mataró since 2015 and is known for his ability to reach consensus. He is also the first secretary of the PSC in the Maresme region. With a PhD in physics from the University of Barcelona, Bote has combined his political career with teaching and research in the scientific field.
Political career and achievements
Since taking office, Bote has led important changes in Mataró. In 2015, at 32, he became the youngest mayor in the city’s history, gaining the support of CiU until the coalition broke up in 2017. In the 2019 municipal elections, Bote expanded his representation, obtaining 13 councillors, and in 2023, despite a slight decrease in the number of seats, he won a third term thanks to a new agreement with En Comú Podem.
The importance of the FMC in Catalonia
The Federació de Municipis de Catalunya, which Bote hopes to lead, plays a crucial role in promoting local autonomy and coordination between the different municipalities. Founded in 1981, this entity brings together more than 600 localities, representing 91% of the Catalan population. Its influence extends through commissions and collaborations with the regional government, as well as its participation in the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces.
Recognitions and achievements
In 2002, the FMC was awarded the Creu de Sant Jordi, in recognition of its work in support of municipalism in Catalonia. This award reflects the importance of its work in strengthening local entities and representing their interests at the regional level.
Reflections on the future
With the possible arrival of David Bote to the presidency of the FMC, a new chapter in Catalan local politics is opening. His experience and ability to build consensus could be decisive in facing the challenges that municipalities face today. The community is watching with interest how events will develop and what changes this new stage will bring.
