Motions by Podemos to remove Francoist plaques

Today, during the ordinary meeting of the Municipal Board of the Northern District of Palma, 24 proposals presented by Podemos were discussed, which called for the removal of the plaques of the Francoist Ministry of Housing in accordance with the Law of Democratic Memory of the Balearic islands.

These plaques, discovered in the Northern District, are found at the entrances to buildings, in public spaces and are visible from the curbs. They are characterized by containing an inscription and the symbol of the yoke and the arrows typical of Phalangism.

Considerations from Podemos on the plates

Podemos argues that these plaques represent anti-democratic symbolism that should not be tolerated on the streets of Palma, as they violate the rights of the victims of the Franco regime, which are recognized as human rights by the United Nations. For this reason, they urge its immediate withdrawal to comply with Law 2/2018 of Democratic Memory and Recognition of the Balearic Islands.

According to Podemos sources, the proposals have been pending at the request of the Popular Party to find out the competent authority to withdraw them, a situation that Podemos interprets as an attempt to delay the withdrawal until the repeal of the Democratic Memory Law, in collaboration with its VOX partners.

Podemos’ position on heritage

In response to VOX’s criticism, Podemos emphasizes that they do not seek the destruction of the plaques, but their transfer to the City Museum to preserve them and give them a new meaning. In addition, they defend the creation of a Museum of Memory in Palma to house all the heritage and historical documentation of the years of civil war and dictatorship in a way that respects the dignity of the victims.
