The eviction and its impact
On May 8, the Vallcarca settlement was evicted after a devastating fire, leaving 18 homeless people. Despite the City Council’s offer to provide social accommodation, most of those affected have decided to reject this option.
Reaction of the affected
Maria Eugènia Gay, who has been the Deputy Mayor for Social Rights, shared that 11 of the residents of the settlement were in a process of ‘active follow -up’ by Social Services. However, when they were offered a housing solution, almost everyone chose not to accept it.
Particular circumstances
Among those who have rejected the accommodation are six individuals who were part of the SASSEP, as well as a family of three members associated with the SOASS. Currently, this family is in an irregular situation in another place in Vallcarca, a context that complicates its stability.
Attention to the injured
As for the person who was injured during the fire, it is expected to be transferred to a specialized convalescence center after receiving the medical discharge, where he can enjoy continuous health care. On the other hand, an affected young man has been referred to an initial reception center that provides a safe environment and comprehensive support.
The future of others affected
As for the remaining seven people, who had not previously been in contact with Social Services, they have also received emergency accommodation offers they have rejected. Municipal sources have confirmed that, despite the refusal, work is continued to establish links with these individuals and do not impose solutions.
City Council Commitment
The Barcelona City Council reaffirms its commitment to social support, prioritizing the personal autonomy of those affected in each decision made. This approach seeks to respect the needs and desires of individuals affected by fire and eviction, despite the difficulties presented.
