A family tradition of culinary excellence
Since 1961, the Barris family has strived to seek excellence in its products, and if they are local, even better. Currently, the Ca la Maria restaurant in Mollet de Peralada is run by the third and fourth generations of this family dedicated to cooking. Its goal is to offer a culinary experience that evokes memories and emotions in its diners.
The Ca la Maria restaurant has been described as ‘the kitchen of memories’, a phrase that a customer told them years ago and that really defines them. The dishes they prepare, such as fried food with xuia, transport their diners to their grandparents’ kitchen when they were little. The dedication and affection they put into each dish is evident, from the homemade desserts to the baker’s bread and quality coffee.
A traditional cuisine that endures over time
At Ca la Maria, they cook as before, dedicating time and affection to casserole dishes that have disappeared from many kitchens. The Barris family values every aspect of good food, from ingredients to presentation. In addition, the restaurant has a unique space dating back to 1736, which is kept impeccable and well maintained. Its impressive winery stands out especially, which houses almost 500 wine references, including those from the Empordà Designation of Origin and other great Catalan and Spanish houses.
Featured dishes of Empordà cuisine
Among the outstanding dishes at Ca la Maria is the potato and chard dish with dried vegetables and bacon, which offers a sublime crunch. Also famous are the snails a la llauna, made with the ancestral technique of cooking them raw directly in the can, without boiling them beforehand. Another exceptional dish is the country chicken with prawns, which combines sea and mountain in an excellent way. And we cannot forget the roast pigeon with sautéed onion and garlic, soaked in rancid wine and full of flavour, an authentic example of Catalan cuisine.
Delicious desserts and adaptation to intolerances
At Ca la Maria, desserts are a fundamental part of the dining experience. Among the notable proposals are the honey and cottage cheese flan, the Sacher cake, the drunk, the xuixo from Girona, the puff pastry bisbalenc stuffed with angel hair and the Empordà apple tatin. In addition, the restaurant has adapted its cuisine to satisfy intolerances, offering dishes specially adapted for celiacs.
A restaurant with history and authenticity
Throughout its history, Ca la Maria has undergone several renovations, going from a grocery store and barbershop to becoming the large rural restaurant it is today. However, it has never renounced its origins: traditional cuisine with local products, even made by the family itself. Although they remain faithful to tradition, they are also open to new culinary trends. Ca la Maria differentiates itself from the competition in the area by offering an authentic proposal that is far from the French style that prevails in other places.
New proposals: fork breakfasts
This summer, Ca la Maria debuts with fork breakfasts. On Saturdays and Sundays, diners can enjoy a delicious breakfast in the restaurant. In addition, the restaurant has adapted its cuisine to satisfy intolerances, offering dishes specially adapted for celiacs.
A unique culinary experience
Ca la Maria is a restaurant with history and authenticity that offers a unique culinary experience. Their dedication to traditional cuisine, the quality of their ingredients and their attention to detail make each visit special. If you are looking to enjoy Empordà cuisine in a cozy and familiar environment, you cannot miss Ca la Maria.
