A day of historical exploration
Next Saturday, April 5, the Urgelia Sacra organization, known for its cultural initiatives in the region of Catalonia Sacra, offers a unique opportunity to explore the monastery of Sant Pere del Burgal. This activity, which starts at 10:30 am, will be directed by the historian Cristina Simó, who will share with the attendees the importance of this emblematic Benedictine monastic ensemble located in the picturesque village of Escaló, within the municipality of La Guingueta d’Àneu, in the region of Pallars Sobirà.
A journey to the past: Origins of the monastery
The monastery of Sant Pere del Burgal, with a rich history dating to 859, was founded by the abbot Deligat, who received an immunity privilege of the count of Toulouse. Initially established as a Carolingian monastery, it evolved into a women’s Benedictine abbey in the late 10th century, before transforming into a male priory.
Romanesque architecture: a unique heritage
The church of the monastery, despite being partially ruined, is an impressive example of Romanesque architecture, with three naves that are crown to the east with three Lombard design apses. This building is not only notable for its design, but in the west it has an apse of two heights, a feature rarely seen in Catalan Romanesque.
Remains and riches of the past
You can still see the remains of the north nave, with the wall and the arches that separated the ships. On the south nave, traces of two doors that gave access to the monastic units are preserved, which can be identified thanks to their structures.
ART I CULTURE: INCUNABLE VALUE MURAL PINTURES
One of the highlights of the monastery is the central apse, where the original wall paintings have been reproduced, currently stored in the National Art Museum of Catalonia. These works are attributed to the Master of Pedret, and include the remarkable figure of Countess Llúcia de Pallars, an emblematic character in local history.
