A historical find in Villena

During the redevelopment works of the historic center of Villena, an archaeological discovery of great importance has been made. A new section of the city’s medieval wall has been found, on José Zapater Street. This discovery adds to another previous discovery made weeks ago in the same area.

A well-preserved treasure

The section of wall discovered is one of the most interesting and best preserved to date. It is located in the highest part of the street, near the Castillo de la Atalaya, and covers numbers 33 and 35. This section of wall is built with masonry and sits on a slurry of lime mortar. In addition, part of the elevation of the wall is preserved, which allows us to appreciate its original structure.

A look at the past

The wall of Villena was built in the 14th century, during the time of Don Juan Manuel, with the aim of protecting the Villa neighborhood and connecting it directly with the Castle. However, with the passage of time, this construction lost its defensive usefulness and was integrated by homes and civil buildings, until it finally disappeared. The discovery of this section of wall gives us the opportunity to learn more about the history of the city and its evolution over the centuries.

Importance of the discovery

The mayor of Villena, Fulgencio Cerdán, has highlighted the importance of this type of findings for a monumental city like ours. The historical and cultural heritage of Villena has always been protected and valued, and in this case it is no different. Technicians have already established the necessary steps to protect and catalog this new section of wall, ensuring its preservation for future generations.

Balance between preservation and development

The discovery of this section of wall is not a surprise for local authorities, since improvement works in the historic center are always conditioned by possible archaeological finds. However, it is essential to find a balance between heritage protection and city development. The redevelopment works also include updating services such as electricity, water and sanitation, with the aim of improving the quality of life of residents.
