Operation ‘Surprise’: A Coordinated Action Against Drug Trafficking
Recently, the National Police carried out a significant operation known as ‘Sorpresa’, which resulted in the dismantling of a criminal organization dedicated to hashish smuggling on the coast of L’Ametlla de Mar. This operation culminated in the arrest of three individuals who were traveling in a stolen high-engine vehicle.
Key Arrests and Confiscations
The detainees, who were armed with a 7.65mm submachine gun and live ammunition, attempted to escape by ramming a police vehicle, injuring two officers in the process. Their capture led to the seizure of 21 bundles of hashish, totaling 845 kilos of the drug, as well as various weapons and advanced technical devices.
A Well-Organized Plan
The investigation revealed that the group operated from a local housing estate, where they rented properties to store the illegal substances. They used speedboats to receive the drug loads, which were landed on the shores of the Ebro Delta.
Surveillance and Capture Strategy
In late November, officers established a surveillance device in the area, focusing on one of the suspect properties. Their attention was focused on a smaller van that acted as a ‘shuttle’, responsible for providing ‘cover’ for a larger vehicle transporting the drugs.
Decisive Moment
After observing the suspects’ movements, the officers were able to intercept the van just as it was trying to leave the development. Despite their attempts to escape, the officers managed to stop the drug traffickers and make the arrests.
Evidence and Legal Implications
In addition to the 845 kilograms of hashish, authorities found 2,420 euros in cash, a frequency jammer, a night vision device, as well as other equipment designed to evade police detection. The van, gun, and ammunition had been stolen in Belgium and the vehicle was equipped with forged license plates.
Legal Consequences
Those arrested face several charges, including drug trafficking, illegal possession of weapons and vehicle theft. The investigating court has currently ordered provisional detention while the investigation continues.
