A more friendly summer for pets

This summer, a remarkable number of coastal municipalities in Catalonia are preparing to welcome dog lovers and their pets. From the recent data, it is revealed that 45 of the 69 populations that touch the sea will offer spaces dedicated to dogs, a figure that represents a significant increase over the previous year.

News and extensions on dog beaches

The new additions include the city of Tarragona, as well as Sant Pol de Mar i Llançà, which join the list of municipalities with animal beaches. All the coastal regions, except La Selva, will have spaces for dogs, with El Vendrell introducing a new beach this summer.

Access schedules and conditions of use

However, access schedules may vary considerably. For example, the Llevant beach in Barcelona allows dogs to enter only for a few specific hours of the day, from 10.30 to 19.30. Similarly, the beach of the Far de Vilanova i la Geltrú will be accessible to dogs between 9am and 8pm. Other beaches, such as the Prat de Llobregat, offer night times, allowing dogs to enjoy the space from 20.00 to 08.00.

Diversity of dog spaces and services

The diversity of the spaces enabled is remarkable. A space of 300 m² has been designated on the Arenal de l’Arenal beach, while in Deltebre, the Bassa de la Arena beach offers 500 meters for dogs. In contrast, in Portbou, the stretch of the Gran Platja is smaller, with only 30 meters wide.

Services available for pets

Some beaches are well equipped with dog services, such as showers and bins. In Pineda de Mar, for example, a specific shower for pet has been installed. On the other hand, other beaches, such as Cala de Belis in Sant Pere de Ribes, do not offer services, leaving the owners organizing themselves.

The impact of dog beaches regulations

Despite growth in the number of dogs beaches, 24 coastal municipalities do not yet allow access to these pets, citing several reasons. In Sant Pere Pescador, the protection of the fauna of the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà Natural Park is a key factor. In Blanes, the preservation of the blue flag is a priority, as well as the lack of wide spaces.

The future of dog beaches in Catalonia

With 65% of the coastal municipalities now with pet spaces, Catalonia is moving towards a summer more inclusive for families who want to enjoy the sun and the beach with their dogs. Future initiatives and discussions on the creation of more spaces could continue to improve the experience for all animal lovers.
