A crucial moment for Europe
Europe is in suspense ahead of the elections in France, where the presidency is expected to be at stake. The French have already begun to vote in the second round of the elections, in which the fate of the candidates still competing for the seat will be decided. With 501 constituencies at stake, the composition of the National Assembly will finally be defined. Although most constituencies have two candidates, in some there are up to four options.
An electoral process with extended hours
Polling stations have opened at 8 a.m. and will close at 6 p.m., although in large cities like Paris you can vote until 8 p.m. Preliminary results will be announced at 8 p.m. These legislative elections are notable for the withdrawal of more than 200 candidates from different parties, with the aim of avoiding the dispersion of the vote and the election of far-right candidates. In the first round, the extreme right obtained 33% of the votes, which led the other parties to unite in a cordon sanitaire.
An inevitable victory, but without an absolute majority
According to the latest polls, the extreme right is expected to win, although it would not reach the absolute majority necessary to govern. It is estimated that the National Regrouping party will obtain between 190 and 220 seats in the National Assembly, far from the 289 necessary for an absolute majority. During the campaign, the far-right candidate has emphasized the importance of obtaining an absolute majority to govern and right France.
Other political forces at play
Polls also indicate that the left-wing alliance, the New Popular Front, could obtain between 159 and 191 seats, while the bloc led by President Emmanuel Macron would be left with 118-150 representatives. The traditional right-wing party, Los Republicanos, would obtain between 35 and 67 seats. Faced with the possibility of a victory for the far right, the New Popular Front has called for mobilization, since the absolute majority of the National Regrouping is not completely ruled out.
A political landscape in motion
The elections in France represent a crucial moment for Europe. Although the far-right is expected to win, its lack of an absolute majority raises questions about its ability to govern. Meanwhile, other political forces seek to consolidate and confront this situation. The outcome of these elections will have a significant impact on France’s political future and the balance of power in Europe.
