Meritxell Lorenzo: A commitment to vulnerable women
Meritxell Lorenzo Sánchez, originally from Sabadell, is a prominent professional in the field of social education and social work. With a solid academic background that includes a master’s degree in development, cooperation and community action and another in foreign law, he is currently immersed in a new master’s degree dedicated to sexual violence. In addition, she plays a key role as the coordinator of the Civil Association, as a result of the rights in Argentina, and is the director of The Women’s Site, a social initiative located in the heart of the Raval de Barcelona that accompanies women in a state of prostitution.
The Women’s Site: A Refuge for Women in Vulnerable Situation
Promoted by the sisters Oblates of the Blessed Redeemer, the place of women aims to provide comprehensive care to women who are in contexts of prostitution and social exclusion. This entity not only operates locally, but is part of a global network that covers more than fifteen countries, working with a personalized approach and a safe space where women can access social, emotional and educational support.
Integral care and social awareness
The mission of The Women’s Site transcends immediate care, as it also seeks to raise awareness of society about the situation of women at risk. Through this project, a fairer world is promoted, where women’s rights are a priority.
Profile of women attended: a complex reality
Throughout 2024, the entity has attended to 821 women, with a significant increase in new users. 62% of these women, many of whom are migrants, are in an irregular administrative situation. Despite their high academic qualifications, many of them are forced to work in precarious conditions to support their families, often far from home.
A support environment and opportunities
The place of women not only offers social and legal support services, but also promotes labor alternatives. With a training and job placement program, the entity works to provide the tools needed for these women to access a more dignified future.
Intervention methodology: proxima approach
The way we approach women who need help is based on trust and respect. By leaving for prostitution clubs and collaboration with other entities, the Women’s Site creates a support network that facilitates access to life resources.
A legacy that has been extended since 1996
Since its formalization in 1996, the entity has grown in response to the changing needs of women in Barcelona. With a story that begins in 1898, the place of women has evolved to offer a wide spectrum of services, from basic support to innovative initiatives such as the Gospel Choir.
Empowerment and Future: A new vision for women
The place of women represents a significant change in the lives of many women, who find in this entity a space to rediscover their autonomy. With emotional and legal support, women can begin to build a future free of stigma and violence, working towards a life full of opportunities.
Woman Gospel: Music and Community
The Choir Gospel, created in 2016, has become a symbol of cohesion and empowerment, where women can express themselves through music. This project not only promotes its cultural identity, but also serves as a platform for its visibility and recognition in the community.
