Energy Innovation: How to Transform Your Home into a Model of Efficiency

The Path to Energy Efficiency

The possibility of achieving energy self-sufficiency is no longer a distant dream thanks to innovations such as those implemented by Franc Comino, CEO of Sonnen Spain. With two decades of experience in energy optimization, Comino transformed his home in Olot into an example to follow, incorporating a home automation system that allowed him to reduce energy consumption by 30%.

Creating Self-Sufficient Spaces

In 2012, Comino founded Wattia Innova and launched EspaiZero, recognized by UNESCO and Greenpeace as the first fully self-sufficient workplace in Spain. This project was a turning point, demonstrating that it is possible to live without relying on external energy sources for a year. ‘It was a real revolution,’ says Comino, who surprised his neighbors with this initiative.

The Collaboration with Sonnen

EspaiZero’s innovation caught the attention of Sonnen, a German multinational dedicated to the manufacture of energy storage batteries. Comino took over the management of its Spanish division in 2017, with the mission of promoting the use of renewable energies and the flexibility of the electricity market. ‘Without energy storage, the transition to a more sustainable model is impossible,’ he says.

Innovative Products

Sonnen offers a range of energy storage solutions, with the sonnenBatterie as its flagship product, which can be integrated into any photovoltaic system. Comino highlights other models such as the sonnenPro FlexStack, which allow homes and businesses to maximize the use of solar energy.

A Model of Energy Independence in Tarragona

One of Sonnen’s most notable achievements is the collaboration with Endesa for the Mas La Boella hotel, which has achieved 65% energy independence through the installation of solar panels and storage systems. This initiative not only reduces CO2 emissions, but also positions the hotel as a pioneer in sustainability in Catalonia.

Awards and Recognitions

Sonnen has received several international awards, including the Deloitte Technology Fast 50 Award and recognition for its innovation in storage technology. “Competition is fierce, but we offer quality solutions that help combat climate change,” says Comino.

Towards a Sustainable Future

With a complex geopolitical scenario and the need to reduce environmental impact, Comino stresses the importance of raising awareness among companies about the sustainable solutions available. ‘We must compete with high-quality and innovative products to guarantee an energy-sustainable future,’ he concludes.
