The Barcelona Provincial Council has positioned itself as a pioneer in the implementation of renewable energies, a crucial initiative to combat the effects of climate change. At a time when the climate emergency demands immediate action, the organization seeks to transform the energy models of the municipalities of the province.
Initiatives and Projects in progress
With the intention of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting energy savings, the Provincial Council offers subsidies for renewable energy projects, including photovoltaic and biomass solutions. Through two key programs, Renewables 2030 and Ecological Transition 2030, specific requirements have been established to guarantee the significant impact of these initiatives.
Requirements for Subsidized Projects
Renewable energy projects must have a minimum power of 80 kW, while public lighting projects must include more than 300 light points. This strategy seeks to ensure that investments have a real impact on the community.
Economic and Environmental Impact
In Alt Penedès, 13 projects have been approved with a total investment of 3.6 million euros, of which 3.1 million come from the Provincial Council. In Garraf, 5 projects total 4 million euros, with 3.3 million subsidized. These efforts will generate annual savings of 1.1 million euros and are expected to be paid off in a period of 6 years.
Concrete Examples of Actions
Among the outstanding actions in Garraf, the modernization of public lighting in Vilanova i la Geltrú and the installation of solar panels at the Esteve Barrachina school in Sitges are included. In Alt Penedès, the creation of collective self-consumption photovoltaic systems in Sant Llorenç d’Hortons and a similar project at the Mediona sports pavilion are highlighted.
A Sustainable Future
With a total of 179 million euros in projects presented to the province and a contribution of 134.9 million from the Provincial Council, the results are promising. Currently, it is estimated that the initiatives underway reduce around 64,000 tons of greenhouse gases, equivalent to the emissions of 63,000 vehicles, while generating energy savings of 148 GWh per year.
