Harmful impact on aquatic life

A spill of toxic substances into the Besòs River, the result of a fire in a chemical facility in Polinyà, has caused the death of more than a thousand fish. Seven species have been harmed, including the eel, a species already in danger of extinction. Tomás Carrión, director of Environmental Services of the Santa Coloma de Gramenet City Council, reported that these are preliminary data, with more detailed information expected in the coming days, at which time the effects on birds will also be evaluated.

Official statements and severity of the incident

In an interview with ACN, Carrión described the situation as ‘serious’ and compared it to previous incidents, such as one that occurred in 2019. An additional consequence of the spill is the preventive closure of the Besòs River Park and Fòrum beach. A working committee will evaluate whether the Park can reopen this Monday or if it should remain closed.

Causes of the fire and chemical spill

The fire in a chemical products storage company in Polinyà, located in Vallès Occidental, broke out on Friday. The next day the spill was detected in the Besòs River, resulting in the death of several fish. The Catalan Water Agency (ACA) explained that part of the water used to put out the fire contained a contaminating substance that damaged the biological treatment system of the La Llagosta treatment plant, thus causing it to be discharged into the river. This incident generated foam in the water and the mortality of numerous fish.

Ineffectiveness of purifying treatment

According to the ACA, the treatment system of the treatment plant was not effective because the contaminating substance was not compatible with the biological process used. Given this circumstance, the municipalities of Montcada i Reixac and Santa Coloma de Gramenet began to coordinate actions to mitigate the effects of the spill, a process that they estimate will last several days.

Preventive measures and collection of affected fauna

The Montcada i Reixac City Council has urged residents to avoid contact with the waters of the Besòs. For their part, the Rural Agents and members of the ADF have begun collecting the dead fish so as not to affect the food chain. So far, 785 fish have been collected and 23 volunteers with 10 vehicles continue to work.

Cooperation and logistical support

Organizations such as the Federació d’ADF del Vallès Occidental and its ADFs, together with the Catalan Water Agency, the Besòs Consortium and the Agents Rurals, continue to collaborate to remove dead fish from the river to its mouth. Joint work and logistical support continue to be crucial in this task.
