Pollution and impact on the ecosystem
In the area of La Seu d’Urgell Palanca, a wastewater collector is causing serious environmental problems. This infrastructure, which leads directly to the river Segre, not only generates bad odors, but also contributes to the accumulation of polluting materials. Images attached to the presence of urban waste, including a large number of toilet wipes that have accumulated on the river.
A natural environment in danger
The state of the environment in the affected area is alarming, with evidence of deterioration that can affect the biodiversity of the Segre river, which is one of the richest in fauna and flora of the capital of Alturgellenca. Ecology experts warn that wastewater must be previously treated in a sewage treatment plant before being poured into the sanitation network, and not directly on the river.
Rich Biodiversity of the Segre River
More than a year ago, the third Bioblitz on the Segre River provided a detailed view of local biodiversity, with the inventory of 34 species of plants, 21 birds and 5 fish. The observations revealed the presence of native and shore varieties such as alder and poplar, as well as allochthonous species such as the nyamera and the Siberian om.
Bird in his splendor
The bird community observed during the Bioblitz includes species typical of the region, with the remarkable presence of migrators such as gray kitchen and marriage eagle. This birds of diversity is an indicator of the health of the river ecosystem.
The aquatic life of the river
In relation to the fish fauna, the river Segre houses species such as the river trout and the barb tail-tail, which are native and adapted to the mountain waters. However, there are also introduced species such as the gobi and the Phoxinus, which, despite being food for tortillas, can alter natural balance.
Invasive species and their effects
One of the most worrying elements is the presence of the signal crab, an invasive species of American origin. This species can adversely affect local habitats and functionality of ecosystems, although it represents a source of food for otter, a mammal that also inhabits the area.
Final reflections on conservation
The current situation of the Segre river is a clear example of how pollution can affect the biodiversity and health of ecosystems. It is urgent to implement measures to properly manage wastewater and protect one of the most valuable natural resources in the region, in order to guarantee the survival of the species that inhabit it and preserve the health of the environment.
