A reflection on identity and context
Directors Jordi Sàbat and Marta Palacín have asked a provocative question: Can an identity without fractures exist? Inspired by Ortega y Gasset’s famous aphorism on the interrelation between the individual and his environment, the Vilapensa festival has focused on analyzing the ‘Jo’ in relation to the circumstances that surround it.
A festival that extends voices
Vilapensa is not just a forum for philosophers; It is a space where you see music, literature and journalism come together to enrich the debate. Sàbat explains that the initial objective of the festival was to integrate various disciplines to stimulate critical thinking and reflection among the attendees.
The value of sharing Idees
Mercè Ibarz, a writer and journalist, emphasized the importance of offering a platform for various talents in a country with limited resources. “It is essential to create spaces where voices can circulate and share stage,” he says, emphasizing the festival’s potential to foster creativity.
Think of decentralization
Jaume Radigales, in one of the sessions, exposed the need to look beyond the big cities. “Barcelona, in its gentrification, loses sight of the voices that bloom outside the capital,” he said, emphasizing the importance of giving visibility to alternative perspectives.
Philosophy accessible to everyone
Vilapensa seeks to democratize access to philosophical thought, giving free and accessible talks. Sàbat emphasizes that “a citizen who thinks is a better citizen” and that it is crucial to adapt the language to make the philosophy more understandable to all.
Scar as a metaphor for identity
At the opening of the festival, Ibarz and Palacín discussed the notion of the ‘broken Jo’, exploring how identity is built from fragments and scars. “Our existence is a mosaic of breaks and reconstructions,” said Ibarz, emphasizing the importance of recognizing connections with others.
Technology and social mobilization
Marta Poblet, in one of the sessions, examined how new technologies can transform politics and social mobilization. He shared examples such as hologram manifestations, emphasizing the potential of artificial intelligence in consensus formation and citizen participation.
The danger of technological dependence
Despite the opportunities offered by technologies, Poblet warned of the risks associated with its use, such as the possible replacement of human expertise in critical areas. Studies reveal that, despite the capacity of the AI in short tasks, human intelligence is still superior in complex situations.
Musicality and reflection
Professor Jaume Radigales presented a musical session that explored the relationship between night and subjectivity in romantic music, highlighting the emotional and spiritual depth of these works. Music was a vehicle for reflection on the contradictions of human existence.
The future of practical philosophy
The festival will continue with more activities that address crucial subjects, including bioethics and support for broken identities. Vilapensa’s success when attracting a large audience demonstrates a growing interest in the philosophical issues that affect today’s society.
