Extremadura and Andalusia join forces to recover griffon vultures
The autonomous communities of Extremadura and Andalusia have carried out the transfer of 21 griffon vultures to the island of Sardinia, Italy, as part of an international project aimed at restoring the population of necrophagous birds in their former distribution areas in Europe. This joint effort is part of the fight against the decline of this species, which has been severely affected by human factors, such as poisoning, persecution and alteration of its breeding habitats.
Significant contributions to the recovery of the species
For more than 12 years, the General Directorate of Sustainability of the Government of Extremadura and the organization Action for the Wild World (AMUS) have actively collaborated in the contribution of around 600 specimens of griffon vultures and black vultures to support the recovery of these ghoul birds. This initiative has as its main objective the creation of new colonies in reinforcement areas, such as Bulgaria, France, Cyprus and Sardinia, in order to strengthen the population of these birds in Europe. The transport of birds is carried out in a specialized way, using vans and boats to guarantee their arrival in optimal conditions.
Positive impact and continued commitment
The transfer of the 21 griffon vultures has been completed successfully, with all the specimens arriving at their new destination in perfect condition. Extremadura, which is home to approximately half of the Spanish population of black vultures and 40% of the European population of this species, plays a crucial role in the preservation of these necrophagous birds. Likewise, AMUS has demonstrated a long-term commitment to the recovery and conservation of these species through its wildlife hospital, the network of supplementary feeding points and habitat conservation and social awareness projects.
