FC Barcelona and its search for a left winger

FC Barcelona are looking for a left winger for coach Hansi Flick’s project. The German coach is not satisfied with the current players in that position, such as Ferran Torres, Ansu Fati and Raphinha. Therefore, the club is exploring options to reinforce that area of the pitch.

Nico Williams, a discarded option

Initially, Nico Williams, one of the outstanding players in the Euro Cup, had positioned himself as the first option for FC Barcelona. However, coach Hansi Flick does not consider him essential for the team. Although the player is an old desire of Xavi Hernández, Flick does not share the same interest in him.

Furthermore, Athletic Club has made it clear that it has no intention of selling Williams, since his termination clause is almost 60 million euros. This figure has been considered excessive by some Barça officials, especially because Williams could have arrived at the club as a free agent a few months ago.

Interest in Luis Díaz

With Nico Williams’ option ruled out, Hansi Flick has focused his interest on Colombian winger Luis Díaz, who currently plays for Liverpool. Díaz has a contract valid until the summer of 2027 and a market value close to 75 million euros. FC Barcelona has sent emissaries to the United States, where Díaz is concentrated with the Colombian team in the Copa América, to explore the possibility of signing him.

Deco, a former FC Barcelona player, has been one of the main promoters of this operation, showing a clear interest in securing Díaz for the Blaugrana team. However, any progress in negotiations will have to wait until Colombia’s participation in the tournament ends.

Interest from Premier League clubs

While FC Barcelona evaluates its options, several Premier League clubs are interested in the services of Nico Williams. Arsenal and Chelsea are the main contenders to sign the talented winger. Both clubs welcome Barça’s withdrawal from the bid for Williams. Arsenal, with its participation in the UEFA Champions League and notable players such as Bukayo Saka, represents an attractive option for the player. On the other hand, Chelsea are undergoing changes with the arrival of Enzo Maresca as new coach, which could influence their transfer policy.

Another contender in the race for Nico Williams is Newcastle United, who have considerable financial power. However, the lack of European competitions for next season could be a determining factor for Williams not joining his project.
