A meeting that left its mark
“Oh young man, when I am asked I always try to do it. Whether it is later valued or forgotten is another matter. What I will never do is ask for anything for myself.” With these words I met Fermí Puig i Botey. The scene and place of that first meeting remained etched in my memory. That phrase, an answer to a bold question on my part, encapsulated an entire philosophy and way of living that left me perplexed. It was clear to me that Fermí was an authentic person and that first exchange perfectly defined his character.
A master of cooking and life
Fermí Puig, born in Granollers in 1959, died after several months of illness. He leaves family, friends and colleagues with deep regret, especially those at Restaurant Fermí Puig. His career in the world of gastronomy for more than 45 years has been invaluable, contributing significantly to the prestige of traditional Catalan cuisine. His influence was such that friends and the Granollers City Council itself requested the granting of the Creu de Sant Jordi in his honor, due to his notable work in defending Catalan identity.
Promoter of Catalan culinary culture
Fermí’s impact in the kitchen went beyond the stove; His ability to promote and update Catalan gastronomy was essential in the cultural defense of the country. As an author and communicator through books and radio programs, he revived and celebrated Catalan identity in a civic and cultural way. With a deep understanding of Catalan history and values, Fermí highlighted a common disadvantage: the lack of recognition of local talent in life. His wisdom continues to resonate even after his departure.
The man behind the chef
Beyond being an exceptional cook, Fermí was a man of keen intelligence and boundless generosity. His passion extended beyond the kitchen, encompassing his love for Barça and the country’s political evolution. With an innate ability to gather information, Fermí handled the most delicate matters with discretion and lucidity, taking advantage of his privileged position in such emblematic places as the Drolma restaurant at the Majestic hotel, where he won a Michelin star.
An exemplary mentor
Fermí dominated the scene and knew how and when to make his presence felt. I remember one situation where, unable to leave the kitchen to greet his customers, he reassured me by saying, “Don’t worry, when they hear my voice in the kitchen, they know I’m here.” These words reflect his ability to maintain an authentic connection with people, even in the most complicated circumstances. He always expected everyone to do his job with the same dedication with which he did it.
A pillar of integrity and dedication
Fermí Puig was, and will continue to be, an institution inside and outside the kitchen. His way of seeing life and his way of acting became a moral compass for many, demonstrating that doing things well is always of incalculable value. For those who shared moments with him, Fermí was not only a reference in the kitchen, but also a fundamental pillar in the defense of a specific idea of the country. Thank you, Fermí, for your enduring example and your profound legacy.
