Extension of the High Caution Season
The Governing Council has given the go-ahead to the Ministry of Sustainability and Climate Change in advance of April 15, the season of high risk of forest fires in Mallorca and Menorca. This implies immediate restrictions on the use of fire.
From next Monday, the use of fire is prohibited in forest areas and up to 50 meters from their limit, as well as in all recreational areas of the Balearic Islands.
In addition, it will be mandatory to request authorization for cremation on agricultural land located less than 500 meters from forest land.
Reasons for the Decision
The main objective of this anticipated change is to prevent emergency situations in the face of current climate conditions.
The severe drought caused by low rainfall and no rain forecast in the coming weeks increases the risk of fires as fuel material is more available.
Reinforcement of Fire Operations
Faced with the increase in forest fires, the Government has decided to strengthen the Inter-Island Forest Fire Operations (OIIF).
During this year, 25 fires have already been recorded throughout the Balearic Islands, with a total of 16.56 hectares affected, mostly deforested areas.
The population is reminded that regulations and recommendations relating to the use of fire can be found at alertafoc.caib.es.
