Revelations in the ‘Erial case’ trial

Former commissioner José Manuel Villarejo has appeared as a witness in the trial of the ‘Erial case’ in the City of Justice of Valencia, at the request of the defense of Eduardo Zaplana, the main defendant in the case. During his testimony, Villarejo stated that the investigation against the former PP minister was a “setup” by the National Intelligence Center (CNI) with political motivations.

Implications of the former commissioner

Villarejo has implicated the former head of the Central Operational Unit (UCO) of the Civil Guard, Colonel Manuel Sánchez Corbí, in the alleged setup of the CNI against Zaplana. Furthermore, he has mentioned the “number two” of the UCO, suggesting his close relationship with the Spanish secret services due to his connection with the current king through horse riding.

Political interests and personal relationships

The former commissioner has stated that the interest in discrediting Zaplana came more from the party itself than from the PSOE, and has mentioned the good opinion that Mr. [Alfredo Pérez] Rubalcaba had of his client. In addition, he has highlighted his personal relationship with Juan Cotino, former director general of the National Police during the Government of José María Aznar, and has hinted at Cotino’s interest in attacking Zaplana.

Other implications and testimonies

Villarejo has also mentioned the businessman Vicente Cotino, nephew of Juan Cotino, who confessed his uncle’s participation in the ‘Erial case’ plot. Likewise, he has pointed out the former head of the Economic and Fiscal Crime Unit (UDEF) of the National Police, Commissioner José Luis Olivera, for his alleged refusal to investigate Zaplana.

Testimony of Marcos Benavent

The second witness requested by Zaplana’s defense was Marcos Benavent, known as the ‘money junkie’. During his testimony, Benavent attacked his previous lawyer, alleging political motivations. In addition, he has admitted to having orchestrated a setup with Syrian businessman Imad Al Naddaf regarding documents implicating the alleged Zaplana network.
