A new initiative for local trade
Recently, the Councilor for Institutional Relations, Pere Camps, has presented a pioneering manual dedicated to promoting the use of Catalan in commercial establishments. This presentation took place in an event that was attended by Ingrid March, President of Òmnium Anoia, and several representatives of multiple local entities.
Reasons behind the manual
The creation of this document was born of a series of meetings between members of Òmnium Anoia, the Consortium for Linguistic Normalization and Aplec. Concern about the situation of the Catalan language, especially in everyday areas such as purchases or hospitality, was the engine of this initiative.
Community collaboration
With the support of the City Council of Igualada and commercial entities, the manual is currently distributed to all businesses in the city. Camps emphasized the importance of this action as a way to ensure that Catalan has an active role in daily communication.
Promotion of Catalan among newcomers
March emphasized the need to create spaces where newcomers can practice Catalan. Many of them encounter the difficulty that in shops and restaurants they are mostly in Spanish.
Regulations and responsibility
In order to ensure that the use of Catalan is respected, the manual also reminds the establishments their obligation to have the signage in Catalan both inside and outside. This standard is especially relevant to the new businesses that open their doors in the city.
Commitment to the Catalan language
Òmnium Anoia has reaffirmed its commitment to the defense of Catalan in all social spheres. In addition, various training and informative actions are prepared to raise awareness of the importance of language in sectors such as sports and health.
A collective project
This initiative is supported by various organizations, including Òmnium Anoia, the CNL, Aplec, and various merchant associations, as well as the Igualada City Council, who work together to ensure that Catalan has a central role in the daily life of citizens.
