Presentation of a Visionary Plan
As part of the International Day of the Elderly, Gavà has revealed its Active Aging Plan, a strategic document that details the initiatives aimed at ensuring the well-being and quality of life of its older population.
A renewed commitment to the elderly
Mayor Gemma Badia has described this Plan as the ‘guide for the next four years’, with the aim of ensuring that the almost 9,000 elderly citizens of Gavà enjoy an aging full of quality, services and opportunities. Badia has emphasized that this plan is not only a promise, but a reinforcement of the City Council’s commitment to this population segment.
Key actions for active ageing
The creation of the Plan has been a collaborative process with the active participation of the elderly in Gavà, who have contributed both to the diagnosis of the needs and to the definition of the actions. In total, 44 actions have been designed, some of them innovative and others already underway, grouped into four essential areas.
Encouraging autonomy
Among the initiatives to promote autonomy, attention to people in vulnerable situations stands out, with an effort to bring Social Services closer to the community. Also, work will be done on increasing volunteering to combat unwanted loneliness and on strengthening home care services.
A safe and respectful environment
The Plan also addresses the need for an urban environment that respects and integrates the needs of older people. This includes improving public transport, creating accessible spaces and implementing campaigns to prevent abuse.
Participation and inclusion
In order to ensure active participation, a new guidance service will be implemented for those preparing for retirement, as well as active aging activities for people receiving home care.
Continuing education and personal growth
One of the pillars of the Plan is the creation of University Extension Classrooms, which will allow older people to continue learning and growing at a personal and academic level.
A month dedicated to the elderly
The presentation of the Plan coincides with the beginning of the Month of the Elderly in Gavà, a period dedicated to celebrating and recognizing the contributions of this population through various activities, such as walks, talks, dances and workshops, which will promote their participation active
Looking to the future
With this plan, Gavà not only seeks to improve the lives of the elderly, but also to transform the social perception of aging, highlighting their capabilities and contributions. The City Council’s commitment is clear: every stage of life must be lived with dignity and opportunities.
