Mario Mollá was sixth in the final of the 50 m butterfly of the world championships that is being held in Doha. The Barcelona native of CN Terrassa made a good start and stayed in the fight with the best, and in the end he achieved a great sixth position with a time of 23.29. He had entered the final with the third best record, but in such a short test the differences are minimal and marked by small details. The world title surprisingly went to 20-year-old Portuguese Diogo Martos Ribeiro, who won in 22.97, beating the big favourite, American Michael Andrews, who was second in 23.07. By only one hundredth, the Australian Cameron McEvoy had to settle for third place with 23.08.
The CN Terrassa winger César Castro finished in 17th place in the 200m freestyle and missed out on the semi-final by just three hundredths of a second.
He set a mark of 1:47.40 and was the first reserve in the semi-final. Majorcan Hugo González qualified for the final of the 100m backstroke with the third best record. He credited a mark of 53.22, which is again the Olympic minimum, the second in one day since he had also done it in the morning qualifiers.
American Nic Fink won the world title in the 100m breaststroke, while the great Adam Peaty was relegated to third place.
In the 100 m butterfly the German Angelina Kohler won the gold medal, and in the 200 m freestyle the world title went to the American Kate Douglass.
