Growing inequalities and global crises: Reflections on the future

by PREMIUM.CAT

Context global challenging

The current world is presented as a scenario of constant conflicts, from the war between Ukraine and Russia to the violence that shakes the Middle East, through social and political instability in Mexico. These crises, together with the ethnic cleansing and inequalities that are aggravated between the north and the global south, draw a disturbing panorama that affects millions of people.

The Economic Reality in Catalonia

Idescat’s latest survey reveals an alarming reality in Catalonia. The capitalist system, in which we move, is generating an increasingly deeper gap between rich and poor. An alarming 33.8% of children under the age of eighteen are in danger of poverty, while tenants, as well as the immigrant population, experience increasing social exclusion. The data show that 46% of Catalan families are struggling to reach the end of the month.

Data on vulnerable population

Statistics are clear: 29.8% of tenants live at risk of poverty, and 25% of Catalan women are in situations of social exclusion. The reality is that inequality has become a usual phenomenon, and the voices that cry for a change are becoming more and more necessary.

The impact of the climate crisis

The climate crisis manifests itself in Catalonia with more and more extreme events. Citizens have recently experienced electric cuts and stone storms that have devastated harvests. The seasonal cycles become more and more erratic, causing ravages between farmers and the general population.

Natural disasters on an increase

Forest fires and floods have become a constant, affecting the daily lives of people. The magnitude and severity of these natural phenomena, which are often unpredictable, highlight the urgent need for a change in our environmental policies.

Political reaction and militarization

In the face of this scenario, European politicians seem more focused on increasing military spending than on social and environmental needs. The prioritization of the arms industry to the detriment of social justice and ecological transition is a reflection of a system that is disconnected from the true needs of the population.

The danger of the far right

The increase in far right in Europe is not only an isolated phenomenon, but also feeds on the lack of viable political alternatives. Traditional parties, both right and left, have failed to provide solutions that respond to social concerns, leaving the path open to populist speeches that exacerbate fear and chaos.

A necessary reflection

The question is: Can we do something real to avoid injustices, such as the Palestinian genocide, or to stop the destructive tendencies of governments? At a time when critical voices are more necessary than ever, it is essential that we come together to claim a fairer and more sustainable future.
