The signing of an important agreement
This Monday, July 22, an agreement was formalized between the Archbishop of Barcelona, the city council and the parish of Sant Andreu de Palomar. The objective of this agreement is to carry out the rehabilitation of the roof of the Segadores chapel, an emblematic building that belongs to the aforementioned parish. As reported by the Arquebisbat of Barcelona through its website, this agreement will be used to “rehabilitate the structure of the roof with the purpose of consolidating it from a structural point of view, thus ensuring its historical preservation.”
A place of great historical relevance
The Archbishopric has pointed out that this chapel plays a crucial role in telling the story of Catalonia and Europe. Inside it was the Sant Crist, which, during the Reapers’ Revolt in 1640, was used as a symbol by the peasants who marched towards Barcelona in an attempt to free the councillors of the Consell de Cent and the deputy of the Generalitat, who were imprisoned under the order of the Viceroy of Catalonia. The importance of this parish is such that the national anthem of Catalonia refers to the events that took place in this chapel, which will be the subject of rehabilitation.
Significant investment for rehabilitation
During the signing of the agreement, various personalities were present, including the district councilor, Marta Villanueva, the auxiliary bishop and vicar general of Barcelona, Mons. Javier Vilanova, the rector of the parish, Mn. Toni Roman, and the representative of the College of Architects of Catalonia, Sandra Bestraten. This agreement will involve a total investment of close to 300,000 euros, with a contribution of 130,000 euros from Barcelona City Council and the rest covered by the Arquebisbat. The latter has committed to completing the works within a period of two years. The funds will be used to rehabilitate the brick vaults of the different spaces that make up the chapel, respecting the geometry and design of the original vaults. In addition, the roof structure will be improved and the exterior facades will be rehabilitated.
A commitment to the community
When the agreement was signed, the district councilor, Marta Villanueva, celebrated this agreement as a response to an old neighborhood demand, promoted by the parish, the Center d’Estudis Ignasi Iglesias and other community entities. He highlighted that this will allow “recovering and preserving part of the cultural and historical heritage of Sant Andreu de Palomar, keeping the collective memory alive.” Villanueva emphasized that the restoration of the chapel will strengthen the identity of the neighborhood and its cultural legacy, while offering opportunities educational activities to promote historical awareness and appreciation of local heritage.
