An Unprecedented Protest
On June 3, state farmers will cut off all borders between Spain and France in a protest that has been described as ‘historic’ and ‘unprecedented’. This action, which has the support of fifteen agricultural associations from all over the state, will be carried out in places such as Pertús, Irún or Coll d’Ares.
Pressing ahead of the European Elections
The spokesman for Revolta Pagesa, Arnau Rubio, has explained that the aim of this protest is to press ahead of the European elections to achieve ‘greater food security’ through the so-called ‘mirror clauses’ and to eliminate the energy taxes that are applied to agricultural producers as they are in other sectors.
Unite the State Farmers
This protest is significant as it will unite for the first time not only farmers from different parts of Spain but also France. This reflects the will of the sector to make its voice heard forcefully.
Clear objectives
Farmers are demanding the implementation of ‘mirror clauses’ to ensure that imported products meet the regulations applied to local producers. In addition, they demand improvements in food chain laws and the abolition of energy taxes that affect them.
Support and Duration of the Protest
The protest has the support of several agricultural associations from all over Spain and the French side, including the French Independent Movement. The cuts are scheduled to take place on June 3 from 10am and could last more than 24 hours.
