New Plans for the Desalination Plant in Lloret de Mar
Given the recent improvement in the drought situation in Catalonia and the relaxation of restrictions, the Gremi d’Hostaleria of Lloret de Mar (Selva) has decided to temporarily postpone the installation of the mobile desalination plant that they had planned to implement on the seafront to supply the pools during the summer. The rains this spring have increased water reserves and projections indicate that they could be sufficient until January 2025. For this reason, the union has announced that the start-up of the desalination plant is postponed, at least, until January 2025. , date on which new restrictions on water consumption could be applied if the trend towards drought that has affected Catalonia for three years persists.
During the most critical moments of the drought at the beginning of the year, the establishments of Lloret de Mar acquired a private mobile desalination plant that they planned to install on the seafront starting in June. However, with the lifting of restrictions, this project has been postponed indefinitely, since hoteliers do not need to desalinate the water with the exceptional phase in force. Although the Gremi d’Hostelería of Lloret de Mar assures that they will use water from the public network responsibly to fill the pools this summer, they rule out putting the desalination plant into operation.
Future Plans and New Location
The union, in collaboration with the Lloret de Mar City Council, is evaluating alternative locations for the desalination plant. One of the options is to install it near the municipality’s treatment plant, located at the entrance on C-63, before the water park. This facility would have the capacity to treat up to 50,000 liters of seawater per hour. The surplus left after supplying the hotels would be sold to residents who wish to fill their private pools.
