Advancement of the New Line R12
The construction project for the new trains that will operate on the R12 line of Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya is progressing at a good pace. This line will connect the cities of Lleida and Manresa, passing through Alta Anoia, and the service is expected to start at the end of 2025. At a recent event, the Tomorrow Mobility World Congress fair, the company responsible for the manufacture, Stadler , provided details on the current state of production and the innovative features of the new trainsets.
Details about the New Trains
The trains will be electric and will consist of three cars, with a design designed for passenger comfort. Each unit will have six doors on each side, for a total of 12, and a capacity for 439 passengers. The seats will be comfortable, with 140 fixed and 24 folding, guaranteeing a pleasant journey.
Technology and Accessibility
To improve the passenger experience, the new trains will be equipped with a lighting system that will indicate whether the doors are opening (green light) or closing (red light). This is especially useful for the hearing impaired. In addition, each train will feature 15 panoramic information screens and 16 speakers to ensure that all passengers are well informed during the journey.
Inclusive and Functional Design
Inclusivity is a priority in the design of these new trains. All trains will be accessible, with automatic ramps at the doors and a design that will allow an unobstructed interior passage. There will be spaces reserved for people with reduced mobility, as well as multifunctional areas for bicycles and strollers.
Additional Assistance and Amenities
The intermediate car will be equipped with an assistance system for users with hearing aids, which will facilitate the reception of important information and announcements. In addition, the toilet on the train will be adapted for people with reduced mobility, with an electrically operated door to ensure their comfort.
Future and Project Costs
Construction company Stadler plans to deliver the first train for testing in the second quarter of 2025. The contract includes 15-year maintenance for the four electric units, with a total cost of 44 million euros for supply and 21.2 million for maintenance. This investment will not only improve the transport infrastructure, but will also contribute to the sustainability of the Catalan railway system.
