A Comprehensive Plan for the AP-7

The Catalan Transit Service (SCT) has launched an ambitious programme aimed at alleviating the problems facing the AP-7, a crucial road connecting Catalonia with France and the Valencian Community. This plan, designed to deal with increasing congestion and accidents, includes a series of improvements starting in 2025.

Dynamic Speed and Traffic Monitoring

One of the most notable actions of the project is the introduction of a variable speed section that will extend from Maçanet to El Vendrell. This section, approximately 100 kilometers long, will be equipped with artificial intelligence technology that will allow traffic jams to be predicted and the speed limitation to be adapted in real time.

Truck Traffic Control

In addition, radar cameras will be installed in the Terres de l’Ebre area to monitor that trucks use the right lane, an objective that seeks to increase the current compliance rate from 90% to 100%.

New Technologies for Efficient Management

To complement these measures, mobile radars will be installed that will allow dynamic monitoring of traffic and micromanipulation of vehicular flow based on current needs. The SCT plans to have four of these devices in operation this year, with the goal of adding 26 by 2026.

Managing Entries and Exits on Holidays

A key strategy to mitigate congestion will be the introduction of traffic lights that will regulate the flow of vehicles at the entrance to the AP-7. This system will allow staggered access to the motorway, facilitating the entry of vehicles at 10-second intervals.

Additional Options for Peak Days

Additional exit lanes will also be implemented at weekends, which will be enabled in response to traffic conditions. This will be done especially for events such as the Montmeló Grand Prix or during the month of June.

Reassessment of speed limits

Finally, the SCT has decided to adjust certain speed limits. The 100 km/h restriction that was in force between Martorell and Gelida during peak hours will be eliminated, after confirming its ineffectiveness. However, speed limits will be maintained in sections where their effectiveness in reducing accidents has been demonstrated.

These innovations mark a significant step towards safer and more orderly traffic on the AP-7, demonstrating the commitment of the Catalan authorities to resolve one of the most pressing problems in the region.
