International collaboration for fire prevention
The Alt Pirineu Natural Park has embraced a pioneering fire prevention project, which includes a collaboration with Andorra and the French department of Arieja. This initiative represents a new chapter in cross -border forest management, being the first action of the POCTEFA program in this region.
Strategic actions and simulations
Among the planned measures, fire simulations will be made to identify key points for their containment, establishing safety areas of more than 25 meters around the inhabited areas. This approach will allow a more effective response to eventualities.
Practical training of students
The students of the Agricultural School of the Pyrenees have been actively involved in this project, carrying out forest management work in Pallerols de Cantó, in the municipality of Montferrer and Castellbò. Its task includes the preparation of a manual of best practices in the care of the forest.
Recovery of abandoned areas
The project, known as Desbosiguem!, Focuses on the rehabilitation of old agricultural fields and pastures that have been disused. This action not only seeks to restore the ecosystem, but also to revitalize the local communities that depend on these lands.
Long -term vision
The Pau Costa Foundation will be responsible for writing a strategic fire prevention plan that will affect all municipalities within the park. This plan will seek to guarantee the safety and sustainability of the region in the long term.
Practical experiences and learning
The director of the Agricultural School of the Pyrenees, Núria Duró, emphasized the importance of the maintenance tasks performed by the students in plots that had been agricultural until the 60’s and 70’s. Young people have used mechanical tools such as brushings, with the aim of restoring the space.
Collaboration with Arieja professionals
Students have worked together with the Agricultural Promotion Center and Agricultural Promotion of Arieja Comenge. Aitor Zubieta, one of the trainers, said that this collaboration allows them to practice in a different forest environment, enriching their training and experience.
A sustainable future
With the gaze on the future, the creation of a herd to keep the restored areas clean is one of the goals of this project. This initiative will not only promote biodiversity, but will also contribute to the preservation of the natural environment of the Alt Pirineu Natural Park.
