Current Situation of Juan Carlos I
King Emeritus Juan Carlos I is currently under a state of isolation forced by the Royal House. At 86 years old, he has resided in Abu Dhabi since August 2020, living what could be defined as a hidden exile. This distancing is due to the numerous controversies and bad actions that have darkened the period of his reign, forcing the monarchical institution to fully disassociate itself from him to restore the trust of the citizens.
The Longing to Return
Since the beginning of his stay abroad, the desire to return home has increased. Despite his intentions, Juan Carlos I waited almost a year to make his first return trip. As expected, this visit was linked to his participation in regattas in Sanxenxo. However, his arrival in Spain was not well received in Zarzuela. The media attention and the commotion generated by his presence caused discontent among the monarchs, who demanded that he consult before any future trip. Additionally, they asked him to keep a low profile if he decided to return.
Discreet Visits and Permission
Later, the King Emeritus applied this recommendation on his visits to Spain. These new trips went almost unnoticed, limiting his public appearances and avoiding conversations with the press. His discreet behavior seems to have had its fruits, since Felipe VI and Queen Letizia decided to lift the ‘punishment’ imposed, allowing him to move around Spain without needing to request prior authorization.
Returns and Conditions
During this year, Juan Carlos I has returned to his country on several occasions, considering the possibility of a permanent return to Spain. However, this desire seems to be far from being realized. The Royal House has established conditions that limit his permanent return to two specific situations.
Circumstances for a Permanent Return
The first circumstance is that you may need urgent surgical intervention. In this case, he would have the possibility of returning without a set deadline, to be treated and recover in his homeland. The second option contemplated is the treatment of a terminal illness, thus ensuring that his death does not occur in Abu Dhabi, which would simplify several procedures for the institution. Outside of these critical situations, his visits will remain temporary.
