A possible pause in the investiture debate
The leader of the Commons, Jéssica Albiach, has put on the table the idea of temporarily suspending the investiture debate if certain events occur, such as the presence of the exiled president Carles Puigdemont and his possible arrest. Albiach has stated that the return of Puigdemont “does not alter the results obtained in the elections”, but believes that if this materializes, the parliamentary groups should meet to deliberate on the continuation of the debate.
How to move forward in the face of a new scenario
With the deadline to elect a new Prime Minister or call new elections set for August 26, Albiach underlines the importance of Puigdemont being able to return to Catalonia without reprisals. He emphasized that it would be regrettable if “a part of the judicial system tried to distort how it was legitimized” the amnesty law that seeks its protection.
Alliance possibilities with the Island Government
At the same time, Albiach does not rule out a future collaboration with a Government led by Salvador Illa. However, he pointed out that concrete negotiations have not yet been entered into with his party. In a conversation with Catalunya Ràdio, he indicated that it will depend on the “spirit” of the Government, especially if ERC approves the agreement in the consultation this Friday.
Commitment to fair funding
With the aim of ensuring compliance with the agreement between ERC and PSC, the leader of the Commons has announced her support for the modification of any law that involves singular funding. Albiach insisted that the real problem is not justice in the funding for Catalonia, but “the fiscal dumping practiced by regions such as Madrid and Andalusia”, a phenomenon which, according to her, unequals the opportunities between the various communities.
