A Collective Commitment to Equality
With the celebration of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the City Council of La Canonja has launched an initiative that seeks to unite voices and actions in the fight against this serious social problem. The Councilor for Feminist Policies, Nereida González, has stressed the need to respond with courage and integration to such a deep-rooted and complex issue.
Visibility and Action: A Clear Message
González stressed that it is essential to recognize gender violence as a structural problem that violates human rights. The City Council reaffirms its commitment to the feminist struggle and denounces every manifestation of violence that affects women. ‘We must work together with the administrations and civil society to address this issue with an intersectional perspective,’ he said.
Scheduled Activities: A Week of Reflection
To make the problem visible, the council has designed an agenda of activities that will extend throughout the week. On Wednesday, November 20, a wood therapy workshop, organized by the Horitzó Center, will kick off the activities. On November 22, Dr. Neus Roig will give a conference in the Època building on ‘Stolen Babies in Spain between 1938 and 1996’, with special attention to the cases of Tarragona, an example of violence against women.
Art and Reflection: Theater and Music
On November 23, the Coral Al·leluia will present a concert with the greatest hits of the 80s at Escola la Canonja. And on November 24, the Teatre Municipal Orfeó Canongí will host the play ‘Ludere’, which revisits the tale of Little Red Riding Hood to address situations of sexist harassment in a subtle way, promoting reflection and debate among spectators.
Reading of the Manifesto and Final Activities
On November 25, there will be two readings of the manifesto, one at 1 p.m. in front of the Town Hall and another at 7 p.m. in Plaça de la Raval, organized by the feminist organization La Mirada Violeta. The program will close on November 26 with a story-telling at the Municipal Library, designed to sensitize the little ones about the importance of gender equality.

With this program, the Canonja City Council seeks not only to commemorate a date, but also to instigate a profound change in society. The involvement of the entire community is essential to eradicate gender-based violence and build a more just and equal future for everyone.
