Landslide victory for the Labor Party

The Labour Party led by Keir Starmer has won a landslide victory in the general election held in the United Kingdom. On the other hand, the Conservatives led by the current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak have suffered a historic defeat. With 632 of the 650 seats already allocated, the Labour Party has won 408 seats, which represents a significant increase compared to the 202 seats obtained in the last legislature. This victory puts the party on track to achieve its best result since 1997, when Tony Blair won 418 seats. In contrast, Rishi Sunak’s Conservative Party has experienced an unprecedented decline, winning only 115 seats compared to the 365 obtained in the 2019 election, in which Boris Johnson promised to execute Brexit.

Results and participation

According to the latest data, the Labor Party has obtained 34% of the vote, while the Conservatives have obtained 23%. The total participation in the elections has been approximately 60%. In the British electoral system, the candidate in each constituency is voted directly and the candidate with the most votes in each of the 650 constituencies becomes the winner, regardless of the percentage of votes at the national level. This means that a party’s victories usually translate into significant hegemony in the House of Commons, while defeats can mean significant losses.

The change starts now

Keir Starmer, leader of the Labor Party, celebrated the victory and declared that “change begins now.” In his speech, Starmer highlighted that the country has the opportunity to recover its future and has emphasized the importance of returning politics to public service and demonstrating that it can serve the common good. Starmer has stressed that the biggest challenge for politicians today is to regain the trust of citizens and has stated that this will be their main objective.

Recognition and apology from Rishi Sunak

Rishi Sunak, for his part, has congratulated Starmer on his victory and has taken responsibility for his party’s poor results. Sunak has highlighted the importance of a peaceful and orderly change in power and expressed his confidence in the stability and future of the country. Although he has apologized for the defeat, Sunak has stated that he will continue to serve his constituents in the House of Commons, although he has not specified whether he will remain leader of the Conservative Party.
