More than sixty organizations and platforms of Mallorcan civil society support Language Day
More than sixty organizations and platforms of Mallorcan civil society have shown their support for the Language Day called by the Balearic Cultural Work. This event, which will be held next Sunday, May 5, in Plaça Major de Palma, has as its motto “Yes to the language!”. This call has received broad support from civil society, which is mobilizing against policies that attack linguistic diversity.
An act of support for linguistic diversity
The entities and organizations that support Language Day are diverse and representative of Mallorcan society. Among them are the GOB, the Memory Association of Mallorca, the Catalan Language Writers Association, the Teachers’ Assembly, the Balearic Publishers Association, the Booksellers Guild of Mallorca, the Association of Balearic performing arts companies, the Federation of Associations of Families of Students of Mallorca, the Federation of Associations of Residents of Palma, Alternativa Docent, STEI Intersindical, Siau, UGT Balearic Islands, UOB, CCOO Balearic Islands, USO Balearic Islands, SEPC UIB and Union of Farmers of Mallorca. All these entities have supported Obra Cultural Balearic in its call to citizens to take to the streets to defend linguistic diversity.
The importance of Language Day
Language Day is an opportunity for the citizens of Mallorca to express their support for linguistic diversity and to ask the democratic political forces to return to the statutory consensus in linguistic matters. This act also aims to demand from the public authorities the decisive impulse of courageous policies that promote linguistic diversity, since they have the statutory and legal obligation to do so. In addition, it calls for an end to the involutionary measures at the beginning of this legislative term and expresses the commitment to linguistic diversity.
Details of the Language Day
Language Day will begin at 5 p.m. in Plaça Major de Palma with a popular ballad performed by Magranes. At 6 p.m. the Correllengua will arrive and then the central event of the Day will be celebrated. The day will end at 7 pm with another popular ballad with Música Nostra.
