The Debate on Judicial Independence

On Tuesday, the newspaper ABC reported on the internal conflict in the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ), where the members proposed by the Popular Party tried, without success, to defend the autonomy of the judicial system against what they consider attacks by the government. Tensions have intensified following criticism from the Minister of Transport, who questioned the decisions of the Supreme Court in relation to the recent amnesty law.

Reactions of the Vocals

A statement signed by ten members of the CGPJ points out that since the formation of this new council, there have been statements by the government that, in their opinion, go beyond the legitimate use of freedom of expression. The members maintain that these criticisms go beyond what would be a reasonable debate on judicial decisions.

Criticism of the Government and the Migration Crisis

The same newspaper also criticises President Pedro Sánchez for his apparent lack of concern regarding the migration crisis, by planning a holiday in Lanzarote. In addition, it mentions that Sánchez has scheduled a tour of Africa without having addressed the concerns in the Canary Islands, where the migration situation is critical.

Investigation into the murder of Mateo

On the other hand, El Mundo has revealed details about the case of the boy Mateo, murdered on a soccer field. The suspect, who has already confessed to the crime, was arrested after police tracked him down following an incident where he chased another minor. Witnesses claim that the detainee displayed strange and uncoordinated behavior, which has led the police to further investigate his mental state.

Celebrations in Catalonia

Meanwhile, the Catalan press is reporting on the festivities in Gràcia, where Carrer Mozart has been awarded first prize in the decorated street competition. This year’s theme, ‘MozartZakis’, transports visitors to a world inspired by the works of Studio Ghibli. Other streets have also been recognised for their creative decorations, including a Las Vegas-style wedding chapel and a recreation of a psychedelic nightclub.

Awards and Recognitions

The prizes have been distributed among various streets, highlighting the originality and dedication of the neighbors in beautifying their surroundings during these festivities. Progrés Street, for example, paid tribute to video games, while Tordera Street surprised attendees with a jellyfish installation.

Reflections on Current Events

The political and social situation in Spain remains complex, with tensions between institutions and an atmosphere of criticism towards the government. As these events unfold, society is watching with interest how both the judicial debates and the cultural celebrations unfold.
