An unexpected water impulse
In March, it has arrived with an unusual force, giving a significant improvement to the water reserves of Catalonia. In the first hours of this Thursday, the reservoirs of the Ter-Llobregat system have surpassed for the first time 50% of their capacity since July 2022, a fact that marks a significant turn in the trend of drought that had affected the region.
A notable incorporation in reserves them
Since the beginning of the month, water reserves have experienced a dizzying increase, from 32.6% to 50%. This increase of more than 20 points is the result of a series of rains that have fallen successively, contributing to a remarkable recovery.
Internal basins in improvement
Internal basins, although they have not yet reached 50%, also show signs of improvement, rising from 31.1% to 49% in just 20 days. Forecasts indicate that this positive trend will continue, with an imminent increase that could be carried above the 50%threshold.
Rivers with generous flow
Earlier this Thursday, the region’s rivers had a significant flow, with the river Ter exceeding 60 m³/s before reaching the Sau reservoir, which has already reached 40% of its capacity. The situation is similar to the Llobregat, which showed a flow of 50 m³/s in Guardiola de Berguedà, while the Baells reservoir exceeds 80%.
The Muga river and its growth
The Muga river, which supplies water to the Darnius-Boadella reservoir, has seen a significant increase in its flow, reaching about 25 m³/s in the early morning. This reservoir has grown from 17% to 43% in only 20 days, an increase that highlights the positive impact of recent rains.
Favorable weather forecasts
The forecasts indicate that the rains will continue in the coming days. This Thursday a partial pause is expected with some scattered showers, but the storm Martinho is expected to bring general rains again on Friday. The passage of a front will leave between 10 and 20 liters of water, an amount that, despite not being extraordinary, will be beneficial given the saturation of the soil and snow that is still in the Pyrenees.
A historical March?
With the expectations of continuity of the rains, the rivers are likely to have a significant flow and the water reserves continue to increase. This March, with its abundant rainfall, it could be remembered as an exceptional month in the weather history of the region.
