New Step Towards Energy Sustainability

In the last plenary session, the Marratxí City Council took an important step by approving a motion that seeks to impose a moratorium on photovoltaic megaparks. This decision, promoted by the Popular and VOX parties, obtained the unanimous support of the members present.

The Importance of Zoning

The government team pointed out the need to request from the administration a regulation that addresses the issuance of licenses for parks that exceed 5 hectares. This regulation will include the creation of a zoning plan that will guarantee a balanced and environmentally friendly distribution.

Key Aspects for Environmental Protection

The zoning plan must consider several factors, such as the preservation of protected land, the distance to inhabited areas, and local planning regulations. This seeks to mitigate impacts on the environment and residents’ quality of life.

Betting on Sustainable Energy

The mayor, Jaume Llompart, reiterated the position of the municipal team against the installation of large photovoltaic parks and advocated more suitable energy alternatives. Llompart remarked that the municipal government seeks to set an example by installing photovoltaic systems in municipal buildings.

Propositive Initiatives in Energy

To show its commitment to sustainability, the City Council has also given space to the Balearic Energy Institute to encourage the creation of new responsible energy projects.

The Voices of the Residents of Marratxí

Public opinion should be the protagonist in decision-making, and the residents of Marratxí have expressed legitimate concerns about the impact that the facilities may have on their surroundings. The possibility of devaluation of properties and the negative visual impact have become hot topics in the local debate.

A Right to Decide

The approved motion reflects the concern of the residents, who defend their right to live in a harmonious environment and take care of the landscape values of the municipality, as well as their quality of life.

Looking Towards the Future

Marratxí’s decision marks an important precedent in the management of renewable energies on the island. With the moratorium implemented and the planning application, a balance is sought between sustainable development and the rights of residents.
