Institutional Changes and Delegation
The first meeting of the Social Council of the Catalan Language after the institutional change in the Balearic Islands was held in the UIB School of Hospitality auditorium. On this occasion, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports, Jaume Bauzá Mayol, presided over the meeting in the delegation of President Prohens. Llorenç Perelló, president of the Institute of Balearic Studies, was a prominent figure in the session, trying to foster an atmosphere of dialogue and avoid unnecessary confrontations.
Diversity of Opinions and Debate Time
The meeting was characterized by the diversity of opinions and the long time devoted to the debate. Government representatives have shown interest in an information session, while members of civil society have expressed their support and criticism of the measures promoted by both the Government and the IEB.
Demands and Positions
Antoni Llabrés, president of the Balearic Cultural Works and vice-president of the Council, has called for an extraordinary session to evaluate the language policies adopted in the Balearic Islands and to approve an institutional declaration. This demand has received the unanimous support of the members of the Council, while the government representatives have chosen to study the proposal without committing.
Open Debate and Participation Rights
The OCB defends that the Social Council should not only be an informative forum, but also an open space where all members can express their opinions on relevant issues such as language policy. This position has generated debate about the role of the Council and the participation rights of its members.
Reactions and Commitments
The reactions of government representatives have been cautious, avoiding immediate commitments and opting to study the proposals presented. The OCB has reminded the members of the Council that the vice-presidents have the ability to call an extraordinary session, highlighting the importance of participation and decision-making within the framework of the Social Council.
