The solidarity of Mercadona customers benefits the food banks of the Canary Islands

Mercadona, a renowned physical and online supermarket company, has made a generous donation of 42 tons of essential products to the Food Banks of Las Palmas and Tenerife. This solidarity action has been possible thanks to the collaboration of Mercadona customers, who have participated with their monetary contributions during the Great Collection organized by the Spanish Federation of Food Banks last November.

The participation of Mercadona customers in the Great Collection

Mercadona has made its 86 supermarkets in the Canary Islands available to the campaign, giving its customers the opportunity to make monetary donations when making their purchases. These donations have been transformed into basic products selected by the Food Banks, who have taken into account the real needs of the beneficiaries. Among the most required foods are pasta, fried tomatoes, rice, cereals and oil. These products have been delivered from the logistics warehouses that Mercadona has in Gran Canaria and Tenerife.

Mercadona’s additional commitment

In addition to the donations made by customers, Mercadona has contributed an additional 10% of the amount raised. This contribution has been converted into Sociedad Cards, a tool that allows users to make complete purchases of fresh and dry products in the supermarket. These cards will be distributed by the Food Banks of Gran Canaria and Tenerife among the beneficiary entities, so that they reach vulnerable families on the islands.

Thanks and recognitions

Pedro Llorca, president of the Las Palmas Food Bank, has expressed his gratitude for the monetary donation made by Mercadona customers during the Great Collection, as well as for the company’s continued collaboration in this initiative and the food donations it makes. .

Hernán Cerón, president of the Tenerife Food Bank, has highlighted Mercadona’s commitment and effort in the Great Collection, and has thanked the company and its customers for their solidarity.

Jose Castilla, Mercadona’s Communications Director in the Canary Islands, has expressed the company’s pride in being able to collaborate by providing its human and logistical resources. He also thanked the customers for their solidarity, since without them this action would not be possible. In addition, he has encouraged continued collaboration in the upcoming virtual food collections, considering that this is the most efficient way to respond to the real needs of the beneficiaries.

Mercadona’s social commitment in the Canary Islands

One of Mercadona’s commitments is to share part of what it receives from society. Within the framework of its Social Responsibility Plan, the company collaborates with more than 50 organizations and social entities in the Canary Islands. During 2023, Mercadona delivered more than 1,345 tons of food and essential products, which is equivalent to approximately 22,000 shopping carts, thus benefiting the Canarian community.
